![]() The interface is also very easy to use, and takes no more than a minute to understand. The stats work very well with the fighting, and the combat is tactical and intelligent. And it just goes to show that well-made real-time combat is good in its own way and that it need not be twitchy. See, I am not much into Dungeon Master clones. I have kept my strength highest and agility second highest, so the Agility works well with swords and Strength well with the axe. Its also connected with stats, wherein Strength determines damage and Agility determines whether or not you have hit the enemy. However, if you are fighting with an axe only, you will lose speed, and enemies will get the chance to hit back at you. And the axe makes for a superb finish, brutally hacking down your enemy. ![]() The sword is a fast weapon, so when you fight your turn with a sword, you get far more attacks, albeit less damage, so you'll inflict alot of damage before the enemy even gets a chance to raise his weapon against you. I had my super strong dwarf equip an axe in one hand and a sword in another. There's such an enormous thrill in the whole process. Your own avatar also shows your character bleeding and being beaten badly. When you finally kill him, he prostrates to the ground in front of you in defeat and then burns himself to death. When you hit the enemy, you are greeted with an image of him being tossed to his sides with blood spraying from his body. Left-clicking your enemy uses the weapon in your right-hand and right clicking uses the weapon in your left. The levels are large mazes based on pressure plates, traps, and many other devices, and it is really fun exploring them and finding more areas in them. Hint: build your character to use magic, it will save a lot of grief later in the game.ĭamn, I just played this game and it's already quite compelling. I've finished it multiple times with different characters. You do not want to be a cockslurping dicknigger, do you? Get it! It's less than 3 dollars. If you do not like this game, you are a cockslurping dicknigger. While Anvil of Dawn has a multitude of flaws, its presentation and charm makes it a must-play for people interested in how to craft a game World. The underground city in particular has one of the most memorable tunes I've heard in a video game and I could honestly recommend the game based on its soundtrack alone. It is beautiful, sombre and reinforces the feeling of being alone in a formerly beautiful land where everything living has now been twisted by dark magics and is trying to kill you. ![]() You can Thus tackle the areas in the order you choose and there are even two possible approaches to the endgame, both entirely viable, although you will miss some items needed for quests if you simply beeline for the big boss lair. My favourite level takes place in a sunken pirate ship where you must find a trapped octopus demon in order to find out how to break the Dark Lord's power, all the while fighting off eerily moaning zombie pirates.Īlthough dungeon based, you can roam the "overworld" map at will and decide which dungeon to enter NeXT, some of which you will need to pass through in order to proceed to other parts of the overworld map. The environments are also very varied: from abandoned underground cities carved in gemstones inhabited by freakish mutations to massive misty bogs crawling with mud elementals to the narrow pathways inside a gigantic redwood tree, no two levels are identical. From the get-go, you are dumped in a formerly prosperous fantasy World ravaged by an invading army of evil and a feeling of isolation and hopelessness permeates the gameworld. I have NEVER seen an RPG that does atmosphere and art direction better than AoD. While Anvil of Dawn may be a bit repetitive at times, it is one of my favourite RPGs of all time for one reason: atmosphere. Anvil of Dawn is a game with fairly popamole hacky-slashy combat, extremely barebones RPG mechanics and very limited meaningful interaction with other NPCs.
